Alex Colas

Reader in International Relations at Birkbeck, University of London

Alex is Reader in International Relations in the Department of Politics at Birkbeck, University of London, where he directs the MSc in International Security and Global Governance and MSc in Global Environmental Politics and Policy. He is author of Empire, Key Concepts Series (Polity Press, 2007) and International Civil Society: Social Movements in World Politics (Polity Press, 2002). He has also co-edited with Bryan Mabee, Pirates, Mercenaries, Bandits and Empires: Private Violence in Historical Perspective, (Columbia University Press, 2010) and with Richard Saull, The War on Terror and American Empire After the Cold War (Routledge, 2005). Alex is a member of the Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Prize Committee.

Alex is interested in subjects ranging from piracy, Spanish responses to terrorism, imperialism, internationalism and global governance. He is currently completing a book with Liam Campling on Capitalism and the Sea.
