Johanna Conterio

Lecturer in International and Modern European History at Flinders University

Johanna is Lecturer in International and Modern European History at Flinders University. Her research examines the environmental, medical, social, and cultural history of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in global, international, and transnational contexts. Johanna is especially interested in the history of environment and health, nature protection, urban planning, maritime environments, and culture. Before starting at Flinders, Johanna was a post-doctoral fellow at Birkbeck as a member of ‘The Reluctant Internationalists’ research group.

Johanna is currently completing a monograph on the role of German models of welfare in the development of Soviet approaches to public health, and the significance of socialist medicine more broadly in the field of ‘international health’ in the interwar years.
